A Swim and A Crawl by Marc Laidlaw, Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine, March/April 2018

This is piece isn’t short enough to be flash fiction, but isn’t long enough to have full characters, and because of this, I think it runs into some curious frustrations for me.

First, off unnamed protagonists have been done so many times I kept waiting for the character to have a name but never did. Second, the surreal atmosphere the writer creates in this piece is neat, but I didn’t feel as though it was enough to carry the story. Third, there was no dialogue at all in it, and if there’s something I love about stories and plots and all that, it’s dialogue. Fourth, this seemed much more focused on surreal imagery and feeling and metaphor than it did on story or character. Really, just one of that piece I shrug once at the end. (D)
